The Castro Verde plains, a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 2017, are the most important conservation area for steppe birds.
Bustards are the emblematic birds of the steppe between Mértola and Castro Verde, not always easy to find.
The Barrancos area, bordering Spain, is, from a bird's eye view, one of the least known and least visited in the Alentejo.
