The Barrancos area, bordering Spain, is, from a birding perspective, one of the least known and least visited in the Alentejo. However, it remains very interesting, whether for birdwatching or for combining birdwatching with a leisurely stroll through its well-preserved holm oak forests. It’s a perfect plan for a fall/winter or spring day.
One of its most emblematic spots is the Noudar Castle area, a secluded castle nesting among holm oak forests, surrounded by two rivers, the Ardilla and the Murtega, which separate it from Spain.
These forests surrounding the castle are the best place in the Alentejo to spot the royal warbler, the bunting, and the rock sparrow, as well as a good variety of woodland passerines. It’s inevitable that black vultures and griffon vultures will fly overhead, and it’s very common to see the black stork, which nests here. On a full-day trip from Mértola, we propose exploring a remote area of the Alentejo, with unique natural scenery and bird species that will make a difference.
