Birdwatching tours in Tavira and Ria Formosa

Starting from Tavira, we propose a guided birdwatching tour through the Ria Formosa. A full day won’t be enough to explore the Ria Formosa Natural Park; we will explore marsh and salt pan areas, as well as agricultural fields and cork oak forests in the transition to the mountains.

Flamingos are emblematic birds due to their size, abundance, and vibrant colors; their calls stay in our ears, but there are many more species that we can easily see in the salt pans and marshes: Common Shelduck, White Stork,  Glossy Ibis, Spoonbill, Purple Heron, Osprey, Marsh Harrier, Black Kite, Western Swamphen, Black-winged Stilt, Black-tailed Godwit,  Pied Avocet,  Dunlin,  Common Greenshank, Common Redshank, Slender-billed Gull, Audouin’s Gull, Caspian Tern, Little Tern, Kingfisher, Yellow Wagtail, Serin.

In the woods and agricultural fields we can see the European Bee-eater, Hoopoe, Iberian Magpie, Sardinian Warbler, Corn Bunting, Iberian Green Woodpecker, Southern Grey Shrike, Woodchat Shrike, Long-tailed Tit, and Golden Oriole. And many more species than those listed here; on a day of birdwatching we can usually see 80 different species, a little more at certain times of the year.
